Week 1: Discussion Question

Gothic literature is a genre of fiction characterized by mystery and supernatural horror, often set in a dark castle or other medieval setting (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gothic+novel). Knowing this, describe the elements or characteristics you found in Frankenstein that make it distinctively Gothic.

  1. Mr. Chertok (and class): Here are the elements I found in Frankenstein that make it a Gothic literature. 1. Dr. F lives in a big castle (he also works in a creepy, dark laboratory.) 2. Raising people from the dead is sort of like alchemy, which I think is pretty medieval. There's a lot of dark in the novel, like things happening at night or in a dark room. 3. People aren't very happy in this story, which also seems like a Gothic thing. Am I forgetting anything??
I really like this book, at least, I like the story, but sometimes it's a little confusing or even boring. But most of it, I like.
I like that we have a class blog!!
